Things to consider when building a new website.

I made contact with Andy, a co-owner of a popular mobile company whilst cold calling one day. In the brief conversation which ensued, I explained to him that I worked for an online marketing agency focused on helping businesses grow and attract more customers online.

He replied that he was interested in online advertising in which I did a quick needs analysis check through with him. It was here I was able to learn and understand the existing advertising services he was currently using, what his goals in the business were and also what his biggest pains and struggles online were.

With my own pre-call analysis, I was able to see that he used a website builder to build his website. His website had a few slight issues with photos not uploaded properly in some of his product listings and it didn’t look too enticing or appealing. With over 30,000 positive reviews on trade me, I asked him as to why his website was in the state it was and whether he considered getting a new website designed for him.

It was this part of the conversation that shocked me. He explained that he was in the process of getting a website built and that he was paying $25k for it!!… He had paid a $12.5k deposit already and that he was waiting for the site to be completed. I asked him as to why he wanted to spend this much and he mentioned that this was because he would get a lot of customers from it and the salesperson he spoke with said so.

Analysing his current online presence, besides trademe, his website was nowhere to be found in the online search. No SEO work was done and there was no way his new website alone was going to cut it. It was here that I explained to him, that his website wasn’t too badly bent out of shape and that a small touch up and minor redesign would be all that was needed. He was confused at first but I explained to him my reasoning.

You see, you can spend tens of thousands on a website but if you don’t have any marketing or proper promotion of your website you won’t see results. It like throwing a huge party with all the fancy food & decorations and not remembering to send out the invites. After explaining this to him he considered his options and mentioned that he would find out more and that if I were to call back in a week he would like to talk some more.

A week late when calling him back it turns out the company he had paid made fraudulent claims and misrepresented their affiliation with other companies like Trademe & Google which caused to him discontinue using them. He was out of pocket but in a sense, he had dodged a bullet. Most small businesses don’t have this kind of budget to throw around especially just on a website. The point I’m trying to make is to be careful.

If you’re wanting to build a new website, First understand fully what it is that a company is going to do for you. Second Find out whether they are building your site from scratch or if they are using templated guides. Third, Seek to learn and understand what your competitor’s websites are like. You don’t need an insanely overpriced website to be successful online. With the right marketing and a few tweaks your website or new ‘to be built’ website, you should be ready to rock’n roll.

If Andy was building a website from scratch that needed perhaps full-on development to allow for a custom inventory management system or some custom re-development then maybe the cost would have been justified but he was only getting a template re-build site that was only 3 pages. Everything else was just smoke and mirrors.

I am very close friends now with Andy. We tweaked his website using the website builder service he was already paying for and also ran some SEO & Google Ad campaigns to boost his online traffic. We created more Call To Action buttons and designed more pages that helped him convert more customers visiting his website. I joke sometimes about how his deposit would have covered his entire SEO costs in which he thanks for me helping him out.

The two new pages we built on his existing site were to help him establish and grow a mobile repair & trade-in service that he had always wanted to do seeing that he was already a Top seller for mobile phones. We were able to capitalize on traffic already coming through for mobile deals and also cross-sell them into trading in their old unwanted phones and also repair phones that they had which they didn’t realize could be fixed.
